A renowned criminologist at the Department of Sociology, University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. Oludayo Tade, has emerged as the pioneer President of the Nigeria Society for Criminology (NSC).
Tade, alongside other executives, was inaugurated at the second international conference of the Society held at the Divine Love Retreat and Conference Centre in Abuja.
Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Society, Prof. Etannibi Alemika, said that the constitution of the pioneer executives was an important step towards positioning the criminology society for a greater future of scholarship in the field and interfacing with the government on security policy suggestions and recommendation.
Alemika, therefore, urged the new executives to mobilise criminologists and engender professionalism, promote mentoring of young criminologists, encourage gender inclusion in developing more women criminologists as well as ensure that the Society contributes to security policies in Nigeria.
Tade, while responding on behalf of the new executives, thanked the BoT and members of the Society for the confidence reposed in the inaugurated executives.
He promised to uphold the constitution of the Society and deepen professionalism in the field.
According to him, the executives would work together to contribute to policy debates around security, policing and other areas where the society has expertise.
“We thank the BoT and members for counting us worthy to serve in this capacity. It is a huge task, and we promise to work together to continue to build the society and make it relevant in the research and policy corridors. We are going to tap from the expertise of our members to assist our country in navigating the security challenges.”
