Plymouth vs Luton predictions: Pilgrims will struggle to stop Luton’s progress

– Plymouth have lost two of their last three Championship matches
– Luton have won back-to-back league games
– Recommended bet:
Luton to win

Looking to build on back-to-back Championship wins, Luton head to Devon on Friday to face a struggling Plymouth side.

Wayne Rooney’s men failed to score for a fourth time this season when going down 1-0 at table-toppers West Bromwich Albion last weekend.

The Pilgrims remain dangerously close to the relegation zone with only five points claimed from their opening six matches.

Meanwhile, Luton are up to 15th after super sub Carlton Morris struck twice in the final 13 minutes to complete a come-from-behind win at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Team news

Rooney made two changes at The Hawthorns last week, bringing in experienced heads Adam Forshaw and Ryan Hardie for Callum Wright and Michael Obafemi.

The Argyle boss could restore the younger duo to his line-up for this home clash, while fellow substitutes Rami Al Hajj and Mustapha Bundu are pushing for chances after impressive cameos from the bench.

As for Luton, head coach Rob Edwards is likely to make a couple of changes to his starting XI with Morris included either instead of or alongside striker Elijah Adebayo.

Victor Moses did enough in his short debut appearance to warrant more minutes on the pitch, while fellow substitute Zack Nelson could get the nod to play on the right instead of Ruell Walters.

The stats

Luton have not lost to Plymouth since 2015 with the Hatters winning three and drawing two of the subsequent five contests.

Morris became the first Luton player to score two or more goals in a league game as a substitute since Luke Berry against Blackburn in September 2021.

Plymouth and Stoke have won the joint-fewest aerial duels in the Championship this season (55 each).

Argyle have the highest expected goals against (xGA) total of any club in the division through six matches.

But despite their lowly position in the table, only four clubs have registered more shots on target than the Pilgrims this season.

Prediction

If Luton’s impressive win at Millwall the week before did not already feel like a major momentum shift in their season, the Hatters dramatic late comeback against the Owls certainly did.

Edwards’ side were nowhere near good enough until Morris’ introduction from the bench, with fellow striker Adebayo looking like a shadow of the player who scored 10 Premier League goals last season.

This match looks like being a good chance to maintain their winning momentum, as they face a Plymouth side that has been a bit too open and naive at times this season.

The Pilgrims are one of the younger squads in the division and lack the experience at this level that the Hatters possess in bundles throughout the spine of their side.
