NYSC: Osun Governor pledges support for corps members during service year

Members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployed to Osun State have been reminded that the scheme is part of a tradition that has been a cornerstone of national unity and development since its inception in 1973.

This charge was given by the state governor, Ademola Adeleke, in his address at the swearing-in and official opening ceremony of the 2024 Batch C Stream I orientation programme at the NYSC permanent orientation camp, Ede.

Governor Adeleke, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youths, Moshood Olagunju, maintained that discipline is the bedrock of success and also charged the youth corps members to be law-abiding, disciplined, and fully committed to the ideals of the scheme.

He said, “Discipline, as you know, is the bedrock of success. As you go through this phase, I urge you to be law-abiding, disciplined, and fully committed to the ideals of the NYSC. Let your conduct during this period set the tone for a fulfilling service year.”

Adeleke, who called on the corps members to be good ambassadors of the NYSC and Nigeria, urged them to embrace positive change, adaptability, and open-mindedness.

While highlighting that Osun is a youth-centric state, he assured that his administration will continue to invest in programmes that foster creativity, entrepreneurship, and innovation, ensuring that the youth of the state remain on the path of progress and development.

“I assure you of our continued support throughout your service year. Our administration remains committed to creating a safe and conducive environment for you to serve and thrive.

“Your dedication is key to the success of the NYSC’s objectives, and I commend you for your service.”

In his address, the Osun NYSC State Coordinator, Agbor Ndoma Obim, acknowledged the support of the Ademola Adeleke administration for ensuring the smooth running of the NYSC programme and noted that the commitment to youth development is exemplary.

Agbor stated that the orientation programme is the beginning of a transformative journey, adding that the NYSC has remained a significant asset to nation-building through youth mobilisation.

“Today marks the beginning of a transformative journey in your lives. The National Youth Service Corps has remained a significant national asset since its inception, contributing to nation-building through youth mobilisation for service and development. The Scheme’s four cardinal programmes are structured and carefully designed to equip you with the skills, discipline, and mindset necessary to contribute meaningfully to society. These programmes are the Orientation Course, Primary Assignment, Community Development Service (CDS), and Winding-up and Passing-out Ceremony.”

The Osun NYSC State Coordinator added that the orientation is one of the most critical phases of the NYSC scheme as it serves as the foundation upon which the rest of the service year is built.

A total of 1,564 corps members, comprising 738 males and 826 females, were deployed to Osun State, while 960 were dislodged from Lagos State.

The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by the Osun State Chief Judge, Justice Oyetola Adepele Ojo, who was represented by Justice Michael Oludare Awe.
