Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Health, Secondary, and Tertiary, Senator Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has urged motorists to exercise caution and avoid reckless driving.
The lawmaker said this in her condolence message to the government and people of Niger State following the tanker explosion the led to death of scores of residents.
She emphasized the importance of adhering to road safety measures and “ensuring regular vehicle maintenance to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.”
DAILY POST reported that over 70 people lost their lives in a petrol tanker explosion along Dikko-Maje road opposite Badeggi fuelling station in Suleja local government area of Niger State on Saturday.
Mr Kumar Tsukwam, Federal Road Safety Commander, FRSC, in Niger, confirmed this in Minna, the state capital.
He said a loaded petrol tanker fell at the scene of the incidence with people scooping the spilling fuel, unaware of the impending danger
In a statement she signed and made available to reporters on Monday, Senator Banigo extended her condolences to the government and people of the state.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, which claimed numerous lives and left many injured, the lawmaker described the tragedy as both “pathetic and unfortunate”.
She offered prayers for the repose of the departed souls and a swift recovery for those injured in the explosion.
Banigo praised the proactive response of Niger State governor, Umaru Bago, who promptly visited the site to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts.
Also, Banigo extended her gratitude to the medical professionals at the Tertiary Hospital and Federal Medical Centre in Niger State.
She also commended the swift actions of relevant agencies, including the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, the Fire Service, the Federal Road Safety Corps, and the Nigeria Police, for their efforts in evacuating victims and managing the aftermath of the disaster.
“May Almighty God provide comfort to the families of the victims and grant healing to those injured,” she prayed.
She lauded their unwavering dedication, swift response, and tireless efforts in providing critical care to the victims of the tragic tanker explosion.
“Your commitment to saving lives amidst such heartbreaking circumstances is commendable. Your compassion and resilience bring hope and healing to those in need. May you continue to find strength and courage as you serve our communities with excellence and empathy,” Senator Banigo remarked.
