The Canadian government have announced a sweeping package of counter-tariffs against United States-made products after President Donald Trump confirmed that his government will go ahead with levies against Canada and Mexico on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau disclosed this in a statement late Monday.
According to Trudeau, Canada will respond with 25 per cent tariffs against $155 billion of American goods.
“Canada will not let this unjustified decision go unanswered,” the statement partly read.
“Should American tariffs come into effect tonight, Canada will, effective 12:01 a.m. EST tomorrow, respond with 25 per cent tariffs against $155 billion of American goods.
“Because of the tariffs imposed by the U.S., Americans will pay more for groceries, gas, and cars, and potentially lose thousands of jobs.”
The retaliation plan is the same as the one he announced in February after Trump signed his executive order for broad tariffs.
Recall that Trump had vowed to impose 25% tariffs on all imports from Canada and Mexico, with 10% for Canadian energy.
The tariffs are scheduled to take effect at 12:01 a.m. EST (0501 GMT) on Tuesday.
