Suspected poachers caught with military arsenal in Chad

Five suspected poachers intercepted in Ennedi-East, Chad Republic, have been presented to the press by government officials.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region, disclosed this on Tuesday in a post on his X handle.

Makama stated that the development marks a significant crackdown on wildlife crime in the region.

According to the report, General Delegate of the Government, Mahamat Togou Tchohimi, alongside the Director General of the Forest and Wildlife Guard, General Bokhit Ali Djar, unveiled the suspects to the media, highlighting the severity of their alleged crimes.

The individuals were reportedly arrested in possession of a “real military arsenal”, raising suspicious of their connection with terrorists networks.

Authorities have since transferred the suspects to the judicial system, where they will face legal proceedings.

The arrests come as Chad intensifies efforts to combat poaching and illegal wildlife trade, particularly in ecologically sensitive zones like Ennedi-East.

Officials reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the country’s biodiversity, warning that those involved in wildlife crimes will face the full force of the law.
