The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has urged the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, to extend support to its training institutions to improve the capacity and professionalism of road safety personnel nationwide.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, on Wednesday in Abuja.
Mohammed commended TETFund’s interventions in tertiary institutions and pointed out the need for collaboration to reduce road traffic crashes and achieve a zero-casualty rate.
“We have academic institutions designated by an Act in 2023 to be self-funded outside the road safety budget. However, we are unable to access the required funding,” Mohammed said.
He called on TETFund to provide infrastructure and financial support to help the corps achieve its goal of reducing road crashes by 50% and ensuring zero fatalities through technology, research, and continuous personnel training.
In response, Echono expressed TETFund’s readiness to collaborate with the FRSC on road safety awareness and training programs across tertiary institutions and the nation.
“TETFund stands poised to collaborate with every agency to accelerate development in our country. We are willing to explore all opportunities for partnership and support,” Echono said.
Echono also praised the FRSC’s digital transformation efforts, noting that technology adoption has contributed to a significant reduction in road accidents and mortality rates.
He assured that TETFund would support certified FRSC-owned institutions and collaborate on research initiatives to advance road safety awareness and training.
