Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu on Thursday officially assumed office as the 23rd Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Speaking at the handover ceremony in Abuja, Nafiu promised to prioritize the welfare of corps members and staff.
He emphasized his commitment to transparent and effective leadership.
“The well-being of corps members will always be a top priority. We will work hard to ensure that their service is one of the most memorable experiences of their lives,” he said.
He pledged to enhance key aspects of the scheme, including the job-matching programme aimed at helping corps members secure employment in the private sector.
“It will also be aimed at incentivizing employers to retain a significant number of our corps members after their service year,” he added.
Nafiu, who took over from Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, also assured improvements in camp feeding and hygiene.
“My team and I shall work tirelessly to enhance camp feeding and hygiene,” he stated.
Acknowledging the NYSC’s role in fostering national unity since its establishment in 1973, he urged staff to remain exemplary role models to corps members.
Until his appointment, Nafiu served as Chief of Staff to the Chief of Army Staff.
He is a graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy and holds a Master’s in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College.
He also holds a Master of International Affairs and Diplomacy from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a BSc in Geography from the NDA, Kaduna.
