Canada’s next Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has informed the United States and President Donald Trump that his country will win the trade war, amid tariff war by both sides.
Canada on March 4 imposed 25 percent tariffs on $30 billion in goods imported from the US, in retaliation of the new levy approved by President Trump.
Speaking after his election victory Sunday evening, 59-year-old Carney advised Americans not to “make no mistake. In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.”
Carney stated that the Trump administration was “attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses”, adding “we can’t let him succeed.”
The new leader said Canada faces “dark days brought on by a country we can no longer trust”, and urged the people “to look after ourselves and look out for each other. We need to pull together in the tough days ahead.”
The ex-governor of the Canadian and UK Central Banks won the Liberal Party’s leadership contest with 85.9% of the votes. The closest challenger was former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Carney, who succeeds Justin Trudeau, and is expected be sworn in as Prime Minister within the coming days. He will lead the Liberals in the next general election.
“Thank you. Now let’s build a stronger Canada, together,” the incoming PM posted to X.
Carney also praised Trudeau for his “hard work, leadership, and great service to our country.”
