The coalition of tertiary institutions’ unions in Adamawa State has commenced an indefinite strike, bringing academic activities to a halt across the state.
The strike, announced by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of academic and non-academic staff unions, follows the expiration of a seven-day warning strike that began on February 27, 2025, and ended on March 10, 2025.
In a communiqué signed by JAC Chairperson. Comrade Maryam Abdullahi and Secretary Comrade Musa Yakubu, the unions directed all members to withdraw from their duties starting Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
“JAC is directing all its members to embark on an indefinite strike action starting from 11th March 2025 until further notice. Members are to ensure full compliance with this directive,” the statement read.
The unions argue that their exclusion from the minimum wage increase is unjust and have vowed to remain on strike until their demands are met. They are also demanding that the government must reinstate their members under the tertiary institutions’ salary structure, fully implement the new minimum wage and halt the deduction of salaries under the guise of tax.
The industrial action is expected to paralyze academic activities across Adamawa State’s tertiary institutions, affecting various colleges, including colleges of education, polytechnics, and health sciences institutions.
The government is yet to officially comment on the demands of the unions.
