Gabby Douglas ends 2024 Paris Olympics bid after gymnastics comeback

Gabby Douglas’ comeback is over.

The 2012 Olympic champion returned to competition this spring after an almost eight-year absence, hoping to make the U.S. team for this summer’s Paris Games. But she told ESPN on Wednesday that she was withdrawing from this week’s national championships, citing an ankle injury.

“I love this sport and I love pushing my limits,” Douglas told ESPN. “I hope I can inspire both my peers and the next generation of gymnasts that age is just a number, and you can accomplish anything you work hard for.”

Gabby Douglas looks on prior to the 2024 Core Hydration Classic at XL Center on May 18, 2024 in Hartford, Connecticut.

The announcement was not a complete surprise after Douglas scratched from the U.S. Classic on May 18 after one event. She’d hoped to improve on her first competition back, at the American Classic on April 27, and had looked better in training. But she fell twice on uneven bars, her signature event, and looked stone-faced as she came off the podium.
