The head coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, has predicted that his team could finish as the second-best side in Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Chelle spoke at his post-match press conference following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in their World Cup qualifier on Tuesday evening at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
The Malian also said he was disappointed for the Super Eagles and for Nigeria as a country over his team’s failure to secure a win against the Warriors of Zimbabwe.
Recall that the Super Eagles threw away a one-goal lead in the game, dropping two crucial points in the Group C standings.
Victor Osimhen’s header was cancelled out by a 90th-minute goal from Tawanda Chirewa.
Speaking after the match, Chelle said: “I am so disappointed for my players, for the country, because we couldn’t do it [win against Zimbabwe]. I don’t know the result of the other game, but I know we can go as second best.”
Nigeria are currently in fourth place with seven points in Group C.
They trail behind Rwanda, Benin Republic, and South Africa, who lead the group with 13 points.
