The 6th Division of the Nigerian Army has announced the successful neutralisation of two armed vandals involved in illegal oil bunkering during a recent operation in the Niger Delta. In addition, the Army has arrested 18 suspects and confiscated significant quantities of stolen petroleum products.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday, acting Deputy Director of the 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lt-Col. Jonah Danjuma, outlined the operation’s achievements, which included the destruction of 13 illegal refining sites, seven boats, and the discovery of eight illegal connection points. The Army also impounded over 60,000 litres of stolen products across the region.
Danjuma explained that the recent successes are part of the Army’s intensified efforts against illegal bunkering. “Troops neutralised two armed vandals, recovered two AK-47 rifles, and arrested 18 suspected oil thieves,” he said.
The operations were prompted by credible intelligence regarding an attempt to vandalise the Nigerian Agip Oil Company pipeline in the Upatabo Community of Ahoada West Local Government Area. Upon arrival, troops encountered armed individuals who engaged them in a firefight. The confrontation resulted in the neutralisation of two criminals and the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, eight magazines, and 69 rounds of ammunition, while others fled the scene.
In Degema LGA, troops deactivated four illegal refining sites and seized over 6,000 litres of stolen products. Similarly, in Odagba village near the Imo River, they intercepted two boats containing over 5,000 litres of stolen products and destroyed one illegal oven.
Additionally, in Akwa Ibom, the Army intercepted six drums of premium motor spirit, totaling approximately 1,500 litres, which were intended for smuggling to a neighbouring country.
All arrested individuals have been handed over to relevant prosecuting agencies, and confiscated products are being managed according to established protocols.
Maj-Gen. Jamal Abdussalam, General Officer Commanding the Division, praised the troops for their effective operations and assured continued efforts to combat illegal activities in the Niger Delta.
