Manchester United’s academy played a crucial role in humbling Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley, as Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo stepped up to register their names on the scoresheet as well as their side’s name on the trophy.
The talk of two trophies in two seasons has helped Erik ten Hag put a strong case in front of the media, and it would not surprise many if this also influences INEOS’ decision in the Dutchman’s favour.
Not only the academy may end up saving Ten Hag’s job, but it could also help INEOS in the transfer market thanks to the impressive performance of another graduate, Mason Greenwood.
The Man United talent, who spent the recently concluded season at Getafe, has attracted interest from Europe’s biggest clubs, having scored 10 goals in all competitions in Spain.
Barcelona, Juventus, and Lazio have all been linked with the prolific forward, but Atletico Madrid appear to be the club most seriously interested in the versatile forward.
According to HITC, Diego Simeone’s side are “emerging as favourites” to secure Greenwood’s signature.
It is believed United remain keen on parting ways with Greenwood on a permanent basis, but they will not entertain a ‘cut-price’ deal.
The 22-year-old is tied to his parent club until 2026, allowing the Red Devils the luxury to loan him for another campaign should their asking price is not met during the forthcoming transfer window.
However, United have reportedly given the player the freedom to decide where he wants to continue his career.
In that regard, Atletico have an advantage as the Englishman has “settled well into life in Madrid” with his family.
HITC add that the negotiations over a potential summer deal are underway, as Atletico see Greenwood as an ideal option to strengthen their attack.
Former United forward Memphis Depay is set to depart the Estadio Civitas Metropolitano, and Greenwood could fill his void in Simeone’s setup next term.
