Avian Influenza: Agriculture Ministry to monitor zoonotic risks amid outbreak

The Kano State Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources has assured the public of ongoing efforts to monitor potential zoonotic risks following the confirmation of an isolated case of Avian Influenza (AI) in the state.
Recall that the outbreak was detected at a multi-species backyard poultry farm in Hausawa quarters, Gwale Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud, the Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, highlighted the ministry’s proactive measures.

“While sensitization and surveillance are ongoing on poultry farms and live bird markets, we will continue to collaborate with other relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Health, to monitor the potential risk of zoonotic transmission to humans,” Mahmoud said.

“The outbreak was first reported on December 19, 2024, when a farmer brought a case of suspected AI to the Gwale Veterinary Clinic.

“Symptoms observed included sudden deaths, respiratory distress, and high mortality rates among the birds. Laboratory tests conducted on January 1, 2025, confirmed the presence of the AI virus in the affected birds.

“A total of 35 birds had succumbed to the disease, while 16 were culled to prevent further spread,” the statement added.

The statement further added that the ministry’s rapid response team has since carried out the depopulation of infected birds, sealed and decontaminated the affected farm premises, and taken samples from neighboring farms and live bird markets for further investigation.

Dr. Mahmoud stressed the importance of maintaining strict biosecurity measures to prevent the virus from spreading.

“We urge all stakeholders to adopt good biosecurity practices and report any unusual deaths in their flocks promptly,” he said.

The ministry has intensified surveillance efforts and sensitization campaigns at live bird markets and poultry processing facilities.

Additionally, it has partnered with the Ministry of Health to assess and mitigate the risks of human infection.
