Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been ruled out of Euro 2024 with the Netherlands due to injury.
De Jong hasn’t played since being stretchered off in El Clasico in April but had linked up with the national team ahead of the European Championship.
Yet it’s now been confirmed that De Jong won’t fly out to Germany with the squad for the tournament and will instead return to Barcelona for further treatment.
De Jong’s absence will be a massive blow for the Dutch side. Ronald Koeman had said he’d hoped the midfielder would be fit but must now cope without the Barca star.
The Barcelona star had said previously he was willing to take “certain risks” to play at Euro 2024 but it’s clearly now been decided he’s simply not ready.
Meanwhile, Barcelona will simply be hoping that De Jong can benefit from a summer off and be fully fit and raring to go for the new season.
