16-year-old Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has been handed a start for Spain in his first European Championship.

Barcelona star Lamine Yamal could break a Spanish law at Euro 2024 in Germany.

The wonderkid, born in 2007, is playing in his first international tournament and has been named in the starting XI for Spain’s opener with Croatia.

It means that, at the age of 16 years and 338 days old, he is the youngest player in the 64-year history of the tournament.

And marked his historic appearance with an assist for Spain’s third goal, delivering a gorgeous cross for Dani Carvajal.

Yamal, who was also eligible to play for Morocco, is seen as La Roja’s next big thing and has scored seven goals in 51 appearances for Barcelona, who he debuted for as a 15-year-old.

Spain’s youngest ever player and goalscorer, Yamal has even brought his homework to the Euros with him and his having online classes to ensure he does not miss out on vital learning when not providing magic on the right flank.

Not that he would, but Yamal is eligible to drink alcohol in Germany as legal drinking age in public in the country is 14.

As per the Daily Record, those between 14 and 16 can drink beer and wine in bars and restaurants providing they are accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Anyone 16 and above can drink in public settings without the presence of a guardian.

However spirits are not permitted in either scenario as that is reserved for those 18 and older.

It’s a completely different in Spain though as the legal drinking age is 18. In his home country, Yamal is also unable to get a tattoo until his 18th birthday – unless he has authorisation from his parents.

And he is legally not allowed to drive until he is 18 with a full valid licence.

But fortunately he is not restricted when it comes to starring for his country on the biggest stage and you get the feeling he’s going to be a special player for years to come.
