Benue lawmakers urge Gov Alia to mobilise contractors back to Assembly complex


The Benue State House of Assembly has called on Governor, Hyacint Alia to mobilise the contractor handling the renovation of the House of Assembly Complex back to the site to complete work on the building to enable members have a befitting place to carry out their legislative business.

The House took the decision during plenary presided by the Honourable Speaker, Chief Hyacinth Dajoh.

Moving a motion to call on the Governor to mobilise the contractor back to site, the Majority Leader of the House, Saater Tiseer noted that the harassment of Honourable Members by security personnel at the gate of Government House whenever they want to access the Old Banquet Hall for legislative duties has become worrisome.

He appealed to the Governor to complete the renovation work in time to enable members return to the complex.

He said the harassment would have been avoided but for the delay in completing the Assembly Complex, members have been subjected to unfair treatment by the security operatives at Government House.

Minority Leader of the House, Micheal Michael Audu, while seconding the motion said members at several times were being humiliated and subjected to many checks by the Government House security personnel, and sometimes maltreated.

Members who contributed appreciated the Governor for the renovation work and appealed to him to speed up the work to finish on time.

The House also embarked on recess marking the end of the first sitting of the second legislative session ( 2024-2025) of the tenth Assembly.

Recall that Section 101 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended empowers the House of Assembly of a state to regulate its own procedure, including the procedure for summoning and recess of the House.
