Breel Embolo secured victory for Switzerland over Hungary in bizarre fashion after appearing to lose his knee brace in the process.
The Swiss were 2-1 up in their Euro 2024 Group A clash when the Monaco forward was played through on goal in the closing minutes.
Scoring against an international goalkeeper is hard enough at the best of times, but it’s made even trickier when you suffer an unexpected wardrobe malfunction.
As Embolo approached goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, his brace could be seen slipping down his leg before being caught on his ankle.
But in the ultimate show of composure, the 27-year-old managed to shake the brace off his foot before dinking the ball over Gulacsi to make it 3-1 to Switzerland.
That goal wrapped up the three points for his country, while also being the perfect comeback after an injury-hit couple of years.
After suffering an ACL injury, Embolo made just five appearances in Ligue 1 this season, totalling just 181 minutes of action.
Despite that, the forward was called up for Switzerland and marked his outing in their Euro 2024 opener with what will be a hugely morale-boosting goal.
As a result of his fitness issues, Embolo hadn’t played for his country since the World Cup last-16 clash with Portugal in December 2022.
But Embolo’s strike against Hungary is his 14th goal in his 64th appearance for his country.
As a result of their win, Switzerland sit second in Group A after the first round of fixtures, trailing Germany on goal difference.
Next up, they face Scotland who were beaten 5-1 by the hosts on the opening night of the tournament.
Victory over the Tartan Army would guarantee a spot in the next round.
