Bus crash kills 26 in Ethiopia

No fewer than 26 people have been killed after the bus they were travelling in overturned in Oromiya, Ethiopia’s largest region.

Quoting the East Wollega Zone traffic safety inspector, Asnake Mesfin, state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting, said the bus was travelling from Shambu, in the west of the country, to the capital Addis Ababa.

According to Asnake, another 42 people were injured, adding that the death toll could rise.

There were no further details immediately available.

DAILY POST reports that deadly traffic accidents are common in Ethiopia, where driving standards are poor and many vehicles are badly maintained.

In January, a bus overturned in the northern part of the country, killing at least 25 people.

Similarly late December, no fewer than 71 people died in the southern Sidama region when a truck packed with passengers plunged into a river.
