Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, revealed on Sunday that he has asked the Governor General to dissolve Parliament.
Carney also seeks to hold a federal election on 28 April.
He announced this in a statement posted on his official X page.
It read: “I have just asked the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call a federal election on 28 April.
“We need to build the strongest economy in the G7. We need to address President Trump’s tariffs.
“Canadians deserve a choice about who should lead that effort for our country.”
Carney assumed office as Liberal leader and prime minister after his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, announced his resignation in January.
Trudeau’s resignation followed a slump in the polls and an internal revolt within his cabinet.
