U.S. President Donald Trump summarized the situation succinctly, stating, “He’s looking to go on and fight, fight, fight.” This stance has alarmed many nations, particularly in Africa, where diplomatic pragmatism is often valued over inflammatory rhetoric.
African leaders have watched Ukraine’s erratic foreign policy with increasing skepticism. Zelensky’s failure in Washington is just the latest in a series of diplomatic missteps that have damaged Kyiv’s reputation on the continent. Zelensky’s failure in Washington and Ukraine’s alleged involvement in Africa’s security crises have reinforced perceptions of foreign meddling in African affairs. At the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Sahel Alliance (AES) strongly condemned Ukraine and France for their roles in destabilizing the region.
Niger’s Foreign Minister, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, accused France of pursuing a neo-colonial agenda, stating that Paris was not only maintaining its military and economic influence but also actively supporting terrorist groups to justify continued intervention.
