Driver in police net over alleged abduction of passenger


Operatives of Onipanu division of the Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old driver identified as Olayemi Yusuf, for allegedly abducting a female passenger.

The suspect, who is a driver for indrive car hire services was said to have deviated from the intended route and subsequently overpowered the victim, restraining her hands with two plastic wire clips.

Confirming his arrest on Tuesday, the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, told DAILY POST that the incident happened at about 3 pm on Monday.

Odutola stated that the 22-year old passenger identified as Peace, had booked the ride online from Lekki, Lagos, to Off Freedom Way, Lekki.

However, during the journey, the driver who changed from the intending route claimed that his navigation system malfunctioned.

She said, ” On 24 March 2025, at about 1500hrs, officers received information about a suspicious vehicle along Ilogbo Road, Ojuore, Ogun State. A swift police response led to the rescue of the victim, Coutroupis Peace ‘f’ (22 years old).

“Preliminary investigation revealed the victim booked a ride through an online car service from Lekki, Lagos, to Off Freedom Way, Lekki. However, during the journey, the driver claimed his navigation system malfunctioned and deviated from the intended route.

” He subsequently overpowered the victim and restrained her hands with two plastic tyre clips.
Odutola added that on arrival at Omowo Filling Station along Ilogbo road, Ota, the victim raised alarm, drawing the attention of passersby, who intervened and attacked the suspect before police officers arrived at the scene.

She noted that the suspect is currently in police custody while an investigation has commenced.

“Both the victim and the suspect were taken to the police station, with the suspect receiving medical attention due to injuries sustained from the mob attack, ” she added.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has urged members of the public to avoid taking laws into their own hands rather report suspicious activities to the authorities for proper investigation and legal action.
