Edin Terzic leaves Dortmund after Champions League final run

Edin Terzić has left his role as Borussia Dortmund head coach despite leading the team on an improbable run to the Champions League final earlier this month.

“Dear Borussians, even though it hurts me brutally right now, I would like to let you know that I will be leaving BVB as of today,” Terzic said in a statement.

“It was a huge honour to lead this great club to a German Cup victory and, most recently, to a Champions League final.

“After our final at Wembley, I asked those in charge for a chat because after ten years at BVB, five of them as part of the coaching team and two and a half as head coach, I feel that the upcoming new start should be accompanied by a new man on the touchline.”

Dortmund lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final on June 1, owing to goals from Vinícius Júnior and Dani Carvajal.

Terzić, who stepped into the role on a permanent basis before the 2022-23 season having worked in various positions at the club since 2018, led the team to a fifth-placed finish in the Bundesliga in 2023-24 and qualification for next year’s top tier of continental competition.

In the previous campaign, Dortmund led the Bundesliga going into the final day of the season, only to surrender the title to perennial rivals Bayern Munich following an unexpected draw with Mainz.
