EFCC chairman honors slain officer with posthumous bravery award

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has awarded a posthumous bravery honor to Assistant Superintendent of EFCC, ASE II Aminu Sahabi, who was tragically killed while on duty.

Olukoyede made the announcement on Friday, February 7, 2025, during a condolence visit to the bereaved family in Sokoto, where Sahabi had lived. The officer was killed on January 17, 2025, in Awka, Anambra State, while carrying out an official assignment to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters.

Accompanied by key EFCC officials, including the Director of Finance and Accounts, Ahmed Pate, and Acting Director of the Sokoto Zonal Directorate, Nwanneka Nwokike, Olukoyede expressed the commission’s shared grief. He reassured the family that Sahabi’s sacrifice would not be forgotten.

“We cannot question Allah’s timing, but Aminu was a gallant officer, full of promise, serving his country when he met with this tragic fate,” Olukoyede said. “I want to assure you that the murderers will face the full wrath of the law.”

The EFCC Chairman also conferred a posthumous bravery award on Sahabi and presented a condolence letter from the EFCC and the Federal Government to the family. He assured the family that the commission would continue to support them, emphasizing that the loss of a loved one is irreplaceable, but the family would not be forgotten.

“We have already processed the benefits due to Aminu, which will be immediately released to his next of kin,” he added.

In response, Justice Mohammed Shuaibu, speaking on behalf of the family, thanked Olukoyede and the EFCC for their support, including the assistance in bringing Sahabi’s body back home for burial. He also acknowledged the EFCC’s tribute by naming a building at the EFCC Academy in Abuja after the late officer to immortalize his contribution.

Before concluding the visit, Olukoyede inspected a guard of honor at the Sokoto Zonal Directorate and held discussions with EFCC officers.
