Owner of social media giant X, Elon Musk, has criticised Romania’s reported plans to suspend TikTok.
In a tweet on his X account on Monday, Musk labelled the move an attempt at censorship.
“You can tell who the bad guys are by who is demanding censorship,” Musk wrote in response to reports that the government may block the platform until state institutions complete their investigation into the first round of presidential elections.
This follows violent protests on Sunday after the Electoral Commission rejected the candidacy of frontrunner Călin Georgescu.
Musk later reacted to the decision to ban Georgescu from running in the presidential election, calling the move “crazy.”
Romania had on Sunday barred Georgescu from running in May’s presidential election.
The Bucharest-based electoral bureau invalidated Georgescu’s candidacy after receiving more than 1,000 challenges, mostly related to his anti-democratic and extremist stances.
