– England finished top of Group C
– Switzerland were Group A runners-up
– Recommended bet: England to win
England have stumbled to the quarter-final stage at Euro 2024, but now they can finally provide the performance required to knock out Switzerland and book a last-four place.
Gareth Southgate’s side were seconds away from going out in the previous round, but Jude Bellingham’s sensational late intervention and Harry Kane’s subsequent header against Slovakia means they retain their shot at glory this summer.
Up against a very talented Swiss side who breezed past reigning champions Italy in the last 16 without barely breaking sweat, England will have to be much better, but they certainly have the ability to deliver.
Team news
Southgate is believed to be ready to deploy a back three against the Swiss with John Stones, Kyle Walker and Ezri Konsa, who is likely to replace the suspended Marc Guehi, set to line up in defence.
Bukayo Saka and Kieran Trippier may then be asked to operate as wing-backs as Luke Shaw is still not deemed fit enough to start.
Kobbie Mainoo is expected to retain his place in midfield alongside Declan Rice with Phil Foden, Bellingham and Kane making up the XI.
Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka should be fit to start after getting over a minor adductor issue, while Silvan Widmer will return at right wing-back after serving his one-match ban.
Head coach Murat Yakin has been rotating his front line in the tournament so far, but Breel Embolo should start in the central role, with Ruben Vargas and Fabian Rieder tipped to drop in behind.
The stats
England have a great record against Switzerland, winning 19 of their 27 previous meetings, while there have been five draws and just three victories for the Swiss in the head-to-head stats.
Harry Kane has had the most goal attempts for England so far with 13, the same figure as Switzerland forward Dan Ndoye.
Three Lions midfielder Jude Bellingham has made the most tackles in Euro 2024 so far with 16.
Michel Aebischer and Remo Freuler have impressed for Switzerland in midfield with both players having two assists to their name for the tournament.
Prediction
England have been poor in Germany so far, but have managed to reach the last eight and now they must raise their game.
Amid talk Southgate will change formation to a back three in an attempt to jar the team into action, the Three Lions should be motivated to book their semi-final place.
The Swiss will put up a stern fight and their recent tournament form will be of concern to England. These are opponents who beat France on penalties in the last-16 of Euro 2020 before then only going out on spot-kicks in the quarters to Spain.
However, if Bellingham, Foden, Kane and co get their act together, then Southgate’s side should be good enough on the day to progress.
