Family celebrates alleged drug dealer Abba Kyari’s return from prison

Disgraced former commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force, Abba Kyari, undergoing trial for drug trafficking, was welcomed back home with a party by his friends and family.

A video of the welcome party to celebrate Mr Kyari’s release from Kuje prison went viral on social media on Saturday, shortly after his release from detention after over 27 months.

In the video, Mr Kyari, clad in a white kaftan, sat on a sofa in an apartment decorated with colourful and gold “Welcome Back” foil balloons hung on the wall behind him. Another showed the former police boss surrounded by family and friends.

A voice could be heard ululating in joy over the return of the former police officer.

Last week, the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court granted a two-week bail to embattled Mr Kyari on compassionate grounds.

The bail granted to Mr Kyari, who was arrested on February 14, 2022, over his alleged links with an international drug cartel, comes almost three weeks after losing his mother, Yachilla Kyari, on May 5, 2024.

Mr Kyari and other members of his IRT team were later arraigned on March 7, 2022, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

In 2022, before Mr Kyari was arrested and detained for drug trafficking, Peoples Gazette had exposed his involvement in an international online fraud syndicate led by Ramon ‘Hushpuppi’ Abbas.

Hushpuppi, Mr Kyari’s internet fraud ally, has pleaded guilty to charges, tried and jailed in the U.S.

The Police Service Commission (PSC) ordered Mr Kyari’s immediate dismissal and prosecution over his involvement in the international fraud syndicate.
