As global attention turns to the escalating issues of waste management, pollution, and ecosystem degradation on World Cleanup Day, there is a growing demand for sustainable solutions that not only address these challenges but also empower local communities.
Addressing these issues requires solutions that offer long-term impact through community engagement and sustainable practices. Sterling One Foundation is leading the charge with its Beach Adoption Programme and Tree Planting Initiative, providing communities with the tools and resources to actively participate in protecting and maintaining their natural environments.
The Beach Adoption Programme, launched in 2021, engages coastal communities in Lagos to tackle the growing issue of plastic waste. By training local women and youth in waste collection and recycling, the programme transforms plastic waste into valuable resources that support the circular economy, while also helping to clean up beaches and reduce ocean pollution.
“Our Beach Adoption Programme is creating tangible results by transforming coastal areas and building livelihoods for the communities involved,” said Olapeju Ibekwe, CEO of Sterling One Foundation.
“This initiative is cleaning up the environment while creating a lasting model of sustainability, where waste is transformed into wealth, driving both economic growth and accelerating efforts toward achieving the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in climate action.”
In addition to its work along the coast, Sterling One Foundation has planted 10,000 trees across 18 states, including 24 schools, as part of its Tree Planting Initiative. This effort is designed to combat deforestation, enhance biodiversity, and improve air quality.
“Our tree planting efforts focus on ensuring that trees are cared for and nurtured to maturity, helping restore ecosystems and offering a lasting solution for future generations,” Ibekwe added.
