I make good music, not tied to any genre — Neo Phlames

A singer and journalist, Adeniyi Adewoyin, aka Neo Phlames, has said that he likes to experiment with different genres of music, and does not like being put in a box as regards his creative expressions.

Neo Phlames, who recently released an Extended Play album titled, I Just Did It, told Sunday Scoop, “I describe my sound as good music, regardless of the genre. However, it is more of conscious music in all genres. I am versatile, so I can do any genre, except that I have never tried blues. On this EP, I flirted with different genres, including amapiano, afrobeats and afro-highlife. I just want to be known as the guy who does good music using a blend of English and Yoruba languages.”

Speaking on what inspired the Extended Play album, the singer stated that it was inspired by his love for good music, and the urge to release a body of work.

On how he juggles his career as an artiste and entertainment journalist, Neo Phlames said, “It has not been easy at all, because both are very demanding. I remember the day I released my EP, I was on a radio round, and immediately after my session, I went straight to cover an assignment. So, I had to change my cloth in the car, while also updating my social media. I need a team to do some things for me, but I cannot afford to pay them now as I have limited budget. Basically, I am a journalist by day, and musician at night.”

The singer also stated that being a journalist was both an advantage and challenge. According to him, the pen-pushing profession has helped him to get support from some colleagues in the media and perform at notable shows; but on the flip side, he noted that some people were unable to see him beyond being a journalist.
