Makinde’s aide Odukoye urges restraint
Scores of Ibadan residents protested at the State Secretariat yesterday against the demolition of their homes.
The state had demolished many houses for the ongoing construction of the Ibadan Circular Road.
The affected homeowners, who were at the Secretariat at the time of reporting, brandished placards demanding a halt to the demolitions. They urged the state government to stop the destruction and vowed to remain at the secretariat.
Niyi Fashoye, speaking for the protesters, said the protest was not intended to criticise the governor but to express their frustration over the 14-day ultimatum to vacate their properties without alternative accommodation.
He appealed to the governor to rescind the ultimatum, as affected property owners were overwhelmed. He stated that many had died from acute fear and frustration while others were battling various ailments.
While acknowledging the governor’s efforts in infrastructure development, Fashoye maintained that affected property owners also wanted the 500-meter setback along the Ibadan Circular Road corridor rescinded.
Executive Assistant on Security Matters to the Oyo State Governor, Sunday Odukoya, appealed for restraint and assured affected residents that their concerns would be addressed. He emphasised the necessity of development in Ibadan and reiterated the governor’s commitment to fair compensation.
Odukoya clarified that the construction plan predates the current administration and has been adjusted to align with current needs. He acknowledged the right to peaceful protest but stressed the government’s duty to maintain public peace and order.
The protesters were advised to consult with local council chairmen and present resolutions to the governor for consideration.
Odukoya emphasised the government’s prioritisation of people’s welfare and urged understanding and cooperation for the necessary urban development.
