Islamic nations oppose Trump’s Gaza takeover plan

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation, OIC, has adopted the Arab League’s counter-proposal to President Donald Trump’s bid for the United States’ takeover of Gaza.

The 57-member group met on Friday at an emergency session in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where they endorsed a plan ratified by Arab leaders on Tuesday in Cairo.

The alternative drafted by Egypt wants Gaza to be temporarily governed by an independent committee of experts and protected by international peacekeeping troops.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said the ministerial meeting of the OIC adopted the Egyptian plan, “which has now become an Arab-Islamic plan.”

The Arab League rejects “any form of displacement of the Palestinian people,” calling it “a gross violation of international law, a crime against humanity and ethnic cleansing.”

At the summit in Cairo, leaders agreed on a $53 billion trust fund to pay for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip under a new Palestinian Authority administration.

The rebuild will spread over three phases in five years, during which 1.5 million displaced Gazans would be resettled into 200,000 housing units and 60,000 repaired homes.

President Trump is proposing that the United States take control of Gaza and permanently resettle more than 2 million people in Egypt, Jordan, and other nations.

The recommendation sparked outrage with many countries opposing Trump’s attempt to make Gaza the “Riviera of the Middle East,” advising the US to contribute aid instead.
