A Nasarawa State-based lawyer, Barrister Isah Hassan Nalaraba, has filed a lawsuit against Justice Abdullahi Shams Shama of the State High Court, Doma, for allegedly infringing on his fundamental human rights.
The suit, filed last week before the Federal High Court in Lafia, also names the Nasarawa State Police Command as a respondent.
It stems from claims that Nalaraba’s two mobile phones were confiscated and that he was unlawfully detained during a court sitting.
At the hearing, Nalaraba’s counsel, Abubakar Dogara Esq, informed the court of attempts to serve legal processes on the respondents. This was confirmed by Justice Shama’s lawyer, Yahaya Dangana Esq.
Dogara alleged that on February 5, 2025, his client was present to conduct legal business when Justice Shama reportedly ordered his detention and the seizure of his phones following a misunderstanding over recording court proceedings.
“There was an arrest even from the bar while he was fully robed as a lawyer,” Dogara said.
“He was taken to the Doma police division, where he spent the night, and his release was conditioned on surrendering his two phones.”
The court has adjourned the case until April 29 for hearing.
