NOSDRA Director calls for legislative action for adequate funding of agency

The Director General of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, Engr Chukwu Emeka Nwoke, has raised concerns over the inadequate overhead budgetary releases for the agency.

He said the paucity of funds was affecting the agency’s operations, particularly in fulfilling its mandate under the National Oil-Free Contingency Plan.

This situation was highlighted during a project defense session held by the Ministry of Environment with a legislative committee, emphasizing the critical need for increased financial support to effectively manage oil spill incidents in Nigeria.

Nwoke attributed the funding challenges to the envelope budgeting system, which limits NOSDRA’s financial capacity to respond adequately to oil spills. This system restricts the agency’s ability to mobilize resources necessary for effective spill detection and response, thereby undermining its operational efficiency.

During discussions with Senator Ned Nwoko, who leads the committee and represents a region severely affected by oil spills, Engr. Nwoke expressed hope that the committee would recognize the urgency of the funding issue.

Senator Nwoko assured him of legislative support aimed at addressing pressing environmental concerns and encouraged NOSDRA to explore alternative funding sources to sustain its operations.
