Kwara distributes 42,000 bags of fertilisers from CBN

Chairman of the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC), Mohammed Baba-Okanla, has revealed that over 21,000 applicants put in for ad hoc jobs against Saturday’s local council elections in the state.

In another development, the state government, yesterday, began the distribution of 42,000 bags of fertilisers to farmers across the state as part of efforts to promote food security.

A senior employee of the commission, who hinted that the number of applicants reflected the socio-economic situation in the country, informed that about 7,000 applicants were eventually considered. KWASIEC, however, disclosed its readiness to conduct a hitch-free local council election across the 2,887 polling units in the state.

Featuring on the 42nd edition of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kwara State Council’s Media Parliament Conversation, yesterday, Baba-Okanla disclosed that only five political parties were registered to field candidates for the election, namely All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Peoples Movement (APM), Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Accord Party (AP).

NUJ Chairman, Kwara Council, Abdullateef Ahmed, expressed delight that the state thought it wise to emplace democratically elected governments at the local council levels. Represented by his vice, Binta Mora, the chairman urged the electoral body to conduct a credible election.

In a statement by the Deputy Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Abdulrafiu Mashood, the fertilisers were donated to the state government by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
