Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) Plateau State branch has engaged key stakeholders in its efforts to prevent the spread of Monkeypox (MPOX) in the state.
The branch chairman of the Red Cross, Nurudeen Ishaq Magaji, emphasized the importance of this engagement after confirmed MPOX cases were traced to five local government areas. He stated that the initiative was a collaborative effort between the NRCS and the Plateau State Ministry of Health.
“There are confirmed cases of MPOX in five LGAs. We deliberately selected Jos North, Bokkos, Shendam, Mangu, and Kanke, where such cases have been recorded, to focus our efforts on educating, informing, and enlightening the people about the disease,” Magaji said.
He stressed that the Red Cross alone cannot prevent MPOX, but collective support and collaboration from the public are crucial in controlling the disease.
In his remarks, Plateau State epidemiologist Dr. Maren Damala revealed that the state had recorded 11 confirmed cases of MPOX in 2024.
“So far, we have confirmed 11 cases. There were additional suspected cases, but they tested negative. Unfortunately, one fatality has been recorded in the state,” he stated.
Dr. Damala advised that the best way to prevent MPOX is to avoid sick animals, whether domestic or wild. He also highlighted preventive measures such as maintaining hand and food hygiene, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, seeking medical attention when symptoms appear, and getting vaccinated.
He acknowledged the crucial role of collaborative partners like the Nigerian Red Cross in spreading preventive awareness.
“What the Red Cross is doing is invaluable, particularly in preventive measures. They are educating people on how to protect themselves, encouraging behavioral changes, and promoting disease prevention strategies,” he noted.
Dr. Damala commended the Red Cross for their dedication, not only in urban areas but also in field operations, where they actively support surveillance efforts and public health interventions.
