Pope Francis has suffered two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, the Vatican announced in an update on Monday evening.
The Holy See Press Office stated that the condition was caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus, leading to bronchospasms.
Two bronchoscopies have been performed on the Holy Father to remove large secretions.
The update further noted that non-invasive mechanical ventilation was resumed earlier in the day.
“The Holy Father remained alert, oriented, and cooperative at all times,” the Press Office confirmed, while also stating that his prognosis remains guarded.
Acute respiratory insufficiency occurs when an individual’s oxygen levels do not reach the required level.
Earlier on Monday, Pope Francis announced that he had chosen “Migrants: Missionaries of Hope” as the theme for the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees.
“Many migrants and refugees bear witness to hope through their trust in God,” read a post on the Pontiff’s official X account.
This year’s World Day of Migrants and Refugees will take place in October during the Jubilee.
