Protest: MAPOLY dissolves student union executives

The Management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, has announced the dissolution of the 2023/2024 Students Union Executives.

This decision was taken at the emergency meeting of the Management held on Tuesday.

DAILY POST reports that students of the institution who graduated between 2022 to 2025 stormed the school on Monday to protest the delay of their results and increase in tuition fees.

The students who were seen holding placards with different inscriptions such as “We Want Our Results Now!!! Being An External Student Is Not A Crime!!, Mobilise Us Now For NYSC, Two Years After Graduation, ‘We Are Still Home, Mobilise Us Now” also shut the main gate leading to the school, denying academic and non-academic staff access.

To ensure safety of lives and properties owing to the protest, the management announced the closure of the Polytechnic from Monday, 13th January, 2025, till further notice.

However, on Tuesday, the institution in a statement obtained by DAILY POST announced the dissolution of the student union executives.

The statement which was signed by the school’s public relations officer, Yemi Ajibola, said the dissolution was as a result of the expiration of their tenure by effluxion of time, being currently in the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic session.

He said, “Consequently, the 2023/ 2024 Union Executives is hereby dissolved. Hence, they should STOP PARADING themselves as Students’ Union Executives of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta.”

Responding to this, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ogun JCC expressed dissatisfaction with the institution’s rector, Dr Babatunde Jolaoso, describing his leadership as a tyrannical rule, which has left students and stakeholders in a state of disillusionment.

The Chairman, NANS Ogun JCC, Adeyanju Francis, noted that because of his poor managerial skills, graduated students have been unnecessarily delayed over the unavailability of results, causing undue frustration and jeopardizing their future.

He said, ” As an association, we had high hopes for Dr. Jolaoso’s emergence as the rector of this prestigious institution.

“We rooted for his appointment, believing his academic brilliance would translate into effective leadership. Unfortunately, he has proven that academic excellence is not synonymous with good administration, a critical area where he has failed woefully.”

The student body disclosed that a massive protest would be held on Wednesday, 14th January, 2025, at the school gate and the government house.

“To that end, NANS Ogun JCC, in conjunction with the recognized leadership of the Students’ Union, has resolved to take decisive action. On Wednesday, 14th January, 2025, the mother of all protests will commence simultaneously at the school gate and the government house.

“This demonstration will persist until there is an immediate overhaul of the institution’s administrative processes. The prompt release of all pending results for graduated students. A commitment to addressing the pending time bomb of school fees increment across the state.

“It is worth noting that if the issue of school fees increment escalates to a statewide protest, Dr. Jolaoso will bear full responsibility for the consequences. His stone-heartedness has left us with no choice but to act in the collective interest of all Nigerian students in Ogun State,” he added.
