Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on his supporters to remain steadfast, stating that the political battle ahead extends beyond the recent Supreme Court verdict.
The Supreme Court had nullified the October 5, 2024 local government election in the state.
The apex court also declared that Speaker Martin Amaewhule and 26 other lawmakers remain lawmakers until their status is determined by the court.
The court also ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to withhold allocations meant for Rivers State until the government complies with its orders.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Government House Staff Quarters in Port Harcourt on Monday, Governor Fubara urged his supporters to stay resolute, emphasizing that standing on the side of truth is more important than aligning with falsehood.
He opened his remarks by quoting Philippians 3:18-19, stressing faith and resilience in the face of adversity.
The governor reaffirmed that his administration is guided by divine backing, not by man and assured the people of his unwavering commitment to their interest.
Fubara said, “I want to say here today and to assure everyone that has stood with us; our strength is not on earthly things; that even when we fail here, assuming, as being contemplated, our victory is assured.
“Look, I want you to be in your highest spirit. It is not bout who wins, it’s about the glory and the honour of fighting gallantly.
“Being on the side of truth, not on the side of lies because of cheap favour.
“I want to assure you, all our supporters, I know the news that broke out on Friday must have dampened down your spirit.
“Brace up, what is ahead is more than what we just passed”.
Addressing concerns about governance in the state, the governor dismissed contrary opinions, insisting that his administration is delivering good governance.
He said, “I must continue to tell the world that against what is being said that there is no good governance, there is legitimate, purpose driven governance in Rivers State.”
While reiterating his opposition to violence, Fubara declared that when the time comes for decisive action, he will lead from the front, stating that the worst that could happen is his removal from office.
He also urged the youths to remain strong and patient, assuring them that they would receive clear directives at the appropriate time.
“Let anybody not be deceived, there are faces today that will carry the symbol of some persons and it would be a curse in this state.
“People should know that no matter how we’ve been fooled in this state, it has gotten to a point where this state has decided to take their destiny by their hands.
“In as much as I don’t subscribe to violence, when the time comes for us to take a decision, I will lead the cause for that decision.
“Let me say it again, I am not scared of anything. The worst that will happen is for me to leave the office. Am I leaving the earth? Is it going to stop me from existing?
“So, I’m not even bothered about that, but the right thing must be done and must be said when the opportunity is given to us.
“So, let me thank everyone, more especially our youths. Be strong, don’t be perturbed, be strong, I assure you at the right time, you will get instruction.”
On the newly commissioned staff quarters, Governor Fubara emphasized that the project is aimed at providing a conducive and comfortable living environment for government workers in the state.
