She is finishing her mother’s term of office in the U.S. House. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee died in July.

HOUSTON — Rep. Erica Lee Carter (D) was officially sworn into office Tuesday, but held a special swearing-in ceremony to celebrate with her community Saturday.

Lee Carter is the daughter of former Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee. Jackson Lee served Texas’ 18th Congressional District from 1995 to her death in July.

Lee Carter held a community swearing-in at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church-Youth Church Saturday.

Lee Carter will serve the district until Sylvester Turner is sworn in in January for a full two-year term. Lee Carter endorsed Turner in the election for the full term.

Turner was the Mayor of Houston from 2016 through 2023.

The 18th District covers a large curving section of the Houston metro area, including Downtown Houston. The district leans heavily Democrat.
