Sky Brown, Great Britain’s youngest Olympic medallist, will make her return to the Olympic skateboarding qualifying stage at the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) in Budapest from 20-23 June.
Brown, 15, announced on the eve of the first OQS in Shanghai that she would skip the event due to a knee injury.
According to an announcement at the time it was revealed the Briton had torn the medial collateral ligament in early April, forcing her to the sidelines for at least two months.
Her absence from Shanghai means it has now been over a year since she last competed at an Olympic skateboarding event.
Brown missed the 2023 World Championships in Ostia, Italy due to injury before skipping an Olympic qualifying stop in Dubai in March to pursue an Olympic surfing quota spot for Team GB at the 2024 ISA Surfing Games. She came up just short of her ambition.
How Brown will fare in Budapest having been out of the fray for so long is a question that will undoubtedly dominate the contest.
For every contest the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist has entered she has been the runaway winner, but while she has been away others have been excelling including Olympic silver medallist Hiraki Kokona and most recently, Australia’s Arisa Trew.
Going into Budapest, Brown is currently sitting in 11th with 130,000 points in the World Skate Rankings. These points will be the ultimate determinant as to who will secure a quota spot for Paris 2024.
By the close of the OQS in Hungary, the final women’s park field for the Games will be known with 22 skaters set to obtain quotas. Only three skaters from one National Olympic Committee (NOC) can compete at the Games.
As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes’ participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.
