Tension in Kano’s community over alleged vigilante killings

The Kano Emirate has urged residents of Dabai, a neighborhood in Kano, to maintain peace as security agencies work to identify those responsible for the recent killing of two people.

The suspects are alleged to be members of the local vigilante group.

The call for calm was made by the Tafidan Kano and District Head of Gwale, Alhaji Muhammad Ado Bayero, following a protest by Dabai residents.

The demonstrators, including men, women, and children, carried placards demanding the disbandment of the local vigilante committee, accusing its members of extrajudicial killings.

The protesters formally submitted their grievances to the district head, citing concerns over alleged targeted violence against their youth.

Addressing the gathering, Tafidan Kano expressed sympathy for the affected families and assured them that the Kano State Commissioner of Police had already ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. He emphasized that anyone found culpable would face legal action.

Meanwhile, in a dramatic twist, residents of neighboring communities visited the Kano Emir’s Palace on Thursday morning to submit a counter-petition.

They opposed calls to disband the vigilante group, arguing that it plays a crucial role in maintaining security in the area.

In response to the escalating tension, Tafidan Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Ado Bayero, convened a meeting with key stakeholders, including security agencies and the leadership of the vigilante group.

The discussions focused on finding a lasting solution to the crisis, with a commitment to ensuring justice through legal means.
