They need to feel pain’ – Canadian premier threatens US electricity cut

Ontario may cut off electricity exports to the United States, Premier of the Canadian Province Doug Ford announced on Monday.

Speaking to reporters at a mining convention in Toronto, Ford said the action would be in retaliation for the new tariffs on Canadian goods.

Ford stated that if the U.S. attempts to “annihilate Ontario”, he would fight back, including cutting off “their energy with a smile on my face.”

The Premier said America relies on Ontario, and “they need to feel the pain. They want to come at us hard, we’re going to come back twice as hard.”

Ford confirmed the federal and provincial governments in Canada are united against the U.S., where Michigan, Minnesota, and New York rely on Ontario for electricity.

“The provinces have a big say in it, but it’s the federal government that’s leading the charge. We’re going to stand shoulder-to-shoulder,” he asserted.

President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated that the 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico will become effective on Tuesday.

“The tariffs are all set. They go into effect tomorrow,” Trump affirmed, ruling out the possibility of an extension that would give room for deal-making.

The Trump administration’s reciprocal tariffs will go into effect April 2. The policy will see the U.S. charge nations the same levy imposed on American goods.
