War on drugs: Ex-Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte in Netherlands to face charges against humanity

Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has arrived in the Netherlands to face charges related to the deadly crackdown on drugs he oversaw while in office.

A plane carrying Duterte landed at Rotterdam Airport shortly before 4 pm UK time on Wednesday.

The 79-year-old was arrested on Tuesday for alleged crimes against humanity on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court, ICC.

Duterte was detained by police upon his return from a trip to Hong Kong before being transferred to the ICC.

The ICC began investigating mass killings linked to Duterte’s so-called “war on drugs” during his tenure as Mayor of Davao, a city in the southern Philippines, and later as president.

In its warrant, ICC judges stated that there were “reasonable grounds to believe that Duterte is individually responsible for the crime against humanity of murder.”

During his presidency, Duterte led a sweeping and brutal anti-drugs crackdown that resulted in the deaths of over 6,000 people.
