Wigan and Stevenage share spoils after drab draw

Wigan and Stevenage cancelled each other out at the Brick Community Stadium in a Sky Bet League One encounter low in goalmouth action and excitement.

The visitors threatened inside two minutes when Jamie Reid fired inches wide of goalkeeper Sam Tickle’s far post.

But that was about it for the first period, save for Callum McManaman’s left-footed strike for Wigan which caught the head of a defender on its way behind for a corner.

Stevenage again started the second half in positive fashion, with a free-kick from Harvey White flying past the far post after nicking the Wigan wall on the way.

Dan Kemp then forced a comfortable save from Tickle as Wigan made five substitutions in the space of 25 minutes to try to gain control of proceedings.

One of the new boys, Michael Olakigbe – making his first appearance after breaking a leg in pre-season – weaved his way through the Stevenage defence and pulled the ball back for Baba Adeeko, whose volley was tipped over the top.

Olakigbe then saw a shot tipped round the post by Murphy Cooper but both sides had to settle for a point.
