The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria strongly condemned the recent “unlawful removal” of the elected Governor of Rivers State, allegedly orchestrated by the leadership of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration.
According to the youths, “This brazen act undermines the democratic principles that our nation cherishes and jeopardizes the rule of law.”
Isah Abubakar, National President of the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, said in a statement on Thursday, “We view this action as a direct assault on the will of the people, as expressed through their votes. Such actions threaten the very foundation of our democratic system and raise concerns about the integrity of governance in Nigeria.”
The Council called on all stakeholders, including the judiciary and civil society, to uphold the tenets of democracy and ensure that the voice of the electorate is respected.
The youths also urged President Tinubu’s administration to prioritize national unity and stability over partisan interests and to foster an environment where governance is guided by law, respect, and accountability.
The council emphasised that the democracy Nigerians fought for must not be betrayed by political maneuvering that disregards the constitution and the will of the people.
Abubakar added, “We stand with the people of Rivers State and call for the immediate restoration of their elected leadership. The Northern Youth Council reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding democracy and promoting good governance across Nigeria.”
