Join FISU in tackling climate change

The University Sports Movement is committing to tackling climate change. Help us by joining our pledge to reduce carbon emissions by 50% in 2030 and reach net zero by 2040.

The sports industry has been called upon by the United Nations to take action towards the global climate crisis, given that hosting sports events – big or small – have a direct impact on the environment. For example the emissions from transportation of athletes, coaches, officials and spectators, the procurement of products and services and of course the direct purchase of energy.

FISU has been a dedicated signatory of the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework since 2022, a framework founded by United Nations Climate Change designed for sports organisations and stakeholders in the sport sector to provide support in achieving global climate change goals. Using this framework, FISU hopes that its members can commit to take action and help reduce global threats posed by climate change.

The framework outlines the following principles: undertake systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility; reduce overall climate impact; educate for climate action; promote sustainable and responsible consumption and advocate for climate action through communication.

FISU’s 4-step plan to tackle climate change

  • Step 1: Evaluate the benefits of being a signatory
  • Step 2: Be part of the FISU offsetting programme
  • Step 3: Become a signatory
  • Step 4: Understand the data needed for reporting

The FISU toolkit and the detailed steps as well as a dedicated page on this website will be made available on World Environment Day (5 June 2024). Let’s do this together!
