Talking about the big screens, the highly-anticipated 9th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) was held on Saturday, 20 May, 2023 in Lagos and it was an memorable night of glitz, glamour, emotional speeches and meritorious recognition of Africa’s best in entertainment and film making.

The evening kicked off with exciting and elegant fashion ensembles and dapper tuxedos on the famous red carpet. The sought-after awards ceremony recognized and celebrated extraordinary talent in the African entertainment industry, with over 30 categories spanning television shows, movies, and other creative endeavors.

Bimbo Ademoye won the Best Actress in a Comedy award for her leading role in “Selina”, while Samuel Perry popularly known as Brother Shaggi received the Best Actor in a Comedy award for his performance in “Inside Life.” Best Actor in a Drama or TV series award went to Tobi Bakre for his sterling performance in “Brotherhood.”

Tobi Bakre in his winning speech said, “I want to thank my family, my parents, my beautiful wife; my support system. Jade, thanks for believing in me, and for the other nominees, you inspired all you see here on stage. And you’re going to see more. We’re only just getting started. Thank you!”

Osas Ighodaro won Best Actress in a Drama/TV series. On clinching the award she said, “Thank you, God is good. This means a lot because there are many times I felt counted out and to be able to be here to accept this. Thank you AMVCA, thank you Bolanle Austin-Peters for believing in me. Thank you, God bless you all.”

The biggest winners of the night were Kunle Afolayan’s “Anikulapo” and Jade Osiberu’s “Brotherhood” with five wins each from their numerous nominations.
